Worry
What this specialty means
Worry is the mental habit of anticipating problems and running what‑if scenarios, often in an effort to prevent harm or stay in control. Occasional worry is part of being human; when it becomes frequent, hard to turn off, or interferes with sleep, focus, or relationships, people may seek support. In a mental health context, help might include learning how thoughts, feelings, and body sensations interact, building skills to respond differently, and, when appropriate, engaging in psychotherapy; coaching may target practical routines, while medical care addresses physical or safety concerns.
Why people seek support
People often seek support for worry when looping thoughts crowd out daily life, decisions feel paralyzing, or constant checking and reassurance-seeking strain work, school, or home. Triggers might include career changes, finances, parenting, relationship strain, health news, or world events. Some want coaching to organize tasks and set boundaries with news and technology. Others prefer psychotherapy to explore patterns like perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty, or past experiences that keep worry going. Medical consultation may be considered if symptoms suggest a physical condition or there are safety concerns.
Typical goals
Collaborative goals may include mapping triggers and early signs, separating productive from unproductive worry, and experimenting with skills to shift attention and respond more flexibly. People might practice tolerating uncertainty in small steps, reduce unhelpful reassurance cycles, and use problem‑solving when action is possible. Additional aims could involve calming the body, improving sleep routines, setting boundaries with media, and communicating needs clearly. Depending on preferences, a plan might include values‑based planning, supports for high‑stress moments, and coordination with medical providers if new health issues arise.
