Medication can be an important part of mental health care, but finding the right approach should never feel like guesswork.
At Trifecta Health, medication management begins with understanding you—your symptoms, health history, concerns and goals. Our prescribing providers work collaboratively with you to evaluate treatment options, monitor how you’re responding and make adjustments when needed.
The goal isn’t simply to prescribe medication. It’s to help you find an approach that supports how you feel, function and live.
When Medication Management Can Help
Medication management may be helpful when anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood changes, panic, OCD, sleep concerns or other mental health symptoms begin interfering with your daily life.
You may be considering medication for the first time, wondering whether your current medication is still working, experiencing unwanted side effects or looking for a provider who will take time to understand the bigger picture.
At Trifecta, medication decisions are collaborative. Your provider considers your symptoms, health history, goals and response to treatment to determine what options may be appropriate for you.
What to Expect from Medication Management
Medication management begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Your provider will talk with you about what you’re experiencing, your medical and mental health history, medications you currently take or have tried in the past, and any concerns you have about treatment.
If medication is appropriate, you and your provider will discuss potential options, expected benefits, possible side effects and what to monitor. Follow-up appointments provide an opportunity to evaluate your progress, discuss changes in symptoms or side effects and adjust your treatment when appropriate. Medication management is an ongoing process—not simply receiving a prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Will I have to take medication forever?
Not necessarily.
How long medication is appropriate depends on the condition being treated, your symptoms, how you respond to treatment and other individual factors.
For some people, medication may be used during a particular period of life. For others, longer-term treatment may provide the best symptom management and quality of life.
These decisions should be made collaboratively with your prescribing provider. You should not stop or change psychiatric medication without first discussing it with the clinician managing your treatment.
- What if my current medication isn’t working or is causing side effects?
Medication management is designed to evaluate exactly those concerns.
Your provider can review what you are taking, how long you have been taking it, what symptoms have improved or persisted and any side effects you are experiencing.
When appropriate, your provider may recommend changes to the medication, dosage or treatment strategy.
The goal is to find a treatment plan that provides meaningful benefit while minimizing unwanted effects.
- What happens during a medication management appointment?
Your first appointment typically involves a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms, health history, current and previous medications, treatment experiences and goals.
Your provider may ask about areas such as mood, anxiety, attention, sleep, physical health and daily functioning to better understand the full picture.
From there, you can discuss whether medication may be appropriate and, if so, what treatment options make sense for you.
Follow-up appointments focus on how you are responding, whether symptoms have changed, possible side effects and whether any adjustments are needed.
- What conditions can medication management help treat?

Your provider will determine whether medication management is appropriate based on your individual symptoms, health history and needs.
- Is medication management available virtually?
Yes. Virtual medication management is available when clinically appropriate and when the provider is licensed to treat clients in the state where they are physically located during the appointment.
Some medications have additional requirements.
For certain controlled medications used for severe anxiety, panic or insomnia, Trifecta requires an in-person initial appointment and at least one in-person appointment each year during ongoing prescribing.
Your provider can explain any requirements that apply to your specific treatment.
- If I meet with a counselor, do I also have to see a prescribing provider?
You and your counselor may discuss the possibility of adding medication to your treatment plan depending on the severity of symptoms, but in general, meeting with a counselor does not require that you also see a prescribing provider.
- I am a patient seeking virtual services only. Can I be prescribed medication to treat severe anxiety and/or panic attacks?
If the medication is a controlled substance (benzodiazepine) such as Xanax or Klonopin, our prescribing providers require patients to be seen in person for their first appointment and then may be seen virtually for follow-up appointments. For ongoing treatment where controlled substances are prescribed, we require at least one in-person appointment annually.
- I am a patient seeking virtual services only. Can I be prescribed medication to treat insomnia?
If the medication is a controlled substance (sedative-hypnotics) such as Ambien or Lunesta, our prescribing providers require patients to be seen in person for their first appointment and then may be seen virtually for follow-up appointments. For ongoing treatment where controlled substances are prescribed, we require at least one in-person appointment annually.
- I am a patient seeking virtual services only. Can I be prescribed medication to treat ADHD?
If the medication is a controlled substance (stimulant) such as Adderall or Vyvanse, our prescribing providers require patients to be seen in person for their first appointment and then may be seen virtually for follow-up appointments. For ongoing treatment where controlled substances are prescribed, we require at least one in-person appointment annually.
- How do I know if medication may be right for me?
There isn’t one point at which everyone “should” consider medication.
It may be worth speaking with a qualified prescribing provider when symptoms such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, panic, mood changes, OCD or sleep difficulties are interfering with relationships, school, work or everyday life.
A medication evaluation does not automatically mean you will be prescribed medication. It is an opportunity to discuss what you are experiencing, understand available options and make an informed decision with your provider.
Reasons People Seek Medication management
01.
Symptoms Are Interfering With Daily Life
Anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, panic, mood changes or other symptoms can begin affecting work, school, relationships, sleep and everyday responsibilities. A medication evaluation can help determine whether treatment may reduce that disruption.
02.
Therapy Alone Doesn’t Feel Like Enough
Therapy can be highly effective, but sometimes symptoms remain intense enough to make progress difficult. Medication may provide additional support when clinically appropriate.
03.
Your Current Medication Isn’t Working Like It Used To
Symptoms can change, and medication needs can change with them. Regular medication management gives you and your provider the opportunity to evaluate effectiveness and make appropriate adjustments.
04.
Side Effects Are Affecting Your Quality of Life
Medication should not simply be tolerated because it provides some benefit. Your provider can help evaluate whether another dosage, medication or treatment strategy may better balance effectiveness and side effects.
05.
You Want Another Perspective on Your Treatment
You may already be taking medication but want a provider who will review your history, listen to your concerns and take a broader look at your mental and physical health before determining the next step.
06.
You Want Care That Feels More Connected
Mental health rarely fits neatly into one category. Medication management may work alongside counseling, coaching or other support to address different parts of what you are experiencing.
Medication Management + Counseling
Different tools. One goal.
Medication and counseling serve different purposes, but they can work together. Your medication provider may focus on symptoms, medical history, treatment response and medication effectiveness, while your therapist helps address thoughts, behaviors, relationships, experiences and coping strategies.
When coordination is appropriate and you authorize communication, members of your Trifecta care team can share relevant information to support a more connected treatment experience. This helps keep the focus where it belongs: not on a single service or diagnosis, but on helping you function and feel better overall.
Beyond The Prescription
Medication management should be an active conversation. At Trifecta, you are encouraged to ask questions, discuss concerns and understand why a particular treatment is being recommended. As your needs change, your treatment may change too.
Whether you are exploring medication for the first time, continuing an existing treatment plan or looking for another perspective, our goal is to help you make informed decisions with a provider who understands your needs.
