OCD
What this specialty means
OCD-focused care provides compassionate help to people who struggle with intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) and the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) they feel driven to do to reduce distress. It is different from being orderly or perfectionistic; the cycle is time-consuming and upsetting. Support may include psychotherapy that helps people change patterns, coaching that builds practical skills and accountability, and, when appropriate, coordination with medical providers for medication decisions. Services aim to respect culture, values, and privacy while teaching ways to relate differently to uncertainty and discomfort.
Why people seek support
People might seek help when rituals, checking, reassurance seeking, or avoidance start interfering with school, work, relationships, intimacy, or sleep. Common concerns include fears about contamination, harm, morality, identity, health, or making mistakes, along with a strong need for certainty. Someone may notice that attempts to feel “just right” only bring brief relief and keep life small. Others reach out after a major life change, pregnancy, illness, or stress spike old patterns. Support is sought to understand what is happening, reduce shame, and learn a clearer, more workable path forward.
Typical goals
Typical goals are tailored collaboratively. In psychotherapy, a person may map triggers, obsessions, and compulsions; build a gradual practice plan that reduces rituals; and strengthen flexibility, self-compassion, and tolerance for uncertainty. Coaching might focus on daily routines, values-based actions, task organization, and reducing accommodation with measurable steps. Medical care, when part of the team, may evaluate medication options and monitor safety. Additional goals can include involving loved ones appropriately, planning for setbacks, improving sleep and stress management, and reconnecting with activities that matter.
