Grief and Loss
What this specialty means
Grief and Loss is a support specialty focused on helping people navigate the emotional, relational, and practical impact of significant absences—such as a death, breakup, miscarriage, infertility, health changes, job loss, or shifts in identity. Practitioners may include therapists, counselors, coaches, and group facilitators. Psychotherapy typically explores complex emotions, trauma, and meaning-making; coaching often emphasizes day-to-day coping, structure, and values-aligned action; and medical care addresses any physical health concerns that can accompany grief. Support is compassionate, culturally aware, and paced to a person’s timing and needs.
Why people seek support
People may seek grief and loss support when an absence disrupts daily life, relationships, or a sense of who they are. Common situations include the death of a loved one, divorce or separation, pregnancy loss, infertility challenges, pet loss, estrangement, displacement, serious illness, or retirement and role changes. They might experience numbness, anger, longing, guilt, anxiety, or exhaustion, and feel unsure how to cope at home, work, or school. Support can provide language for complex feelings, ideas for rituals or memorials, help with family dynamics, and preparation for anniversaries, holidays, or sudden reminders.
Typical goals
Collaborative goals may include establishing grounding routines; learning coping skills for waves of emotion; creating personal rituals or memorial practices; exploring meaning and values after loss; strengthening communication, boundaries, and requests for support; addressing guilt or unfinished conversations; planning for triggers and high-stress dates; and reconnecting with relationships, community, or purposeful activities. People may also clarify whether coaching, psychotherapy, peer groups, or community resources fit their needs, and when to seek medical evaluation for health or safety concerns. Pace and methods are individualized and can be adjusted over time.
