Faith
What this specialty means
Faith as a mental health and personal growth specialty refers to support that thoughtfully integrates a person’s spiritual beliefs, values, and practices—whether religious, interfaith, culturally spiritual, uncertain, or non-theistic—into counseling or coaching. Practitioners may draw on clients’ traditions without proselytizing, focusing on meaning, purpose, and identity alongside emotional wellbeing. Depending on training and licensure, services can range from coaching to psychotherapy, and they are not a substitute for medical care. The approach respects autonomy, welcomes questions and doubts, and aims to align care with each person’s worldview.
Why people seek support
People may seek faith-integrated support when life events stir questions about meaning, suffering, or belonging, such as grief, illness, family conflict, moral injury at work, or major transitions. Others may want help reconciling faith teachings with relationships, sexuality, career choices, or cultural expectations. Some hope to process religious harm, spiritual abuse, or intense guilt, while others simply want their coping tools—prayer, meditation, ritual, community service—recognized in care. Individuals exploring deconstruction, conversion, or interfaith partnerships may also value a nonjudgmental space to sort through doubts and preserve what matters most.
Typical goals
Collaborative goals may include clarifying core values, strengthening or thoughtfully revising beliefs, and building daily practices that support resilience and compassion. Work might focus on meaning-making after loss, ethical decision-making, and setting healthy boundaries with communities or leaders while maintaining connection where desired. Clients and professionals could develop spiritual coping plans, improve communication with loved ones about faith differences, and integrate practices like mindfulness, prayer, or service. When relevant, care may coordinate with medical or therapeutic treatment plans, aiming for alignment across supports without assuming any single path is right for everyone.
